    Someone is using Orkut to spread Trojan links in a message disguised as an official e-mail from the Google-owned social network, according to an alert from security firm Websense released Tuesday.

    The message, written in Portuguese to appeal to Orkut's many Brazilian members, looks like it is sent from an Orkut member who is looking for love, Websense says.
    "The message contains several links that appear to lead to the official Orkut Web site. Clicking on a link actually leads to a malicious executable file, which is a Trojan Downloader named 'imagem.exe,'" the Websense alert says. "The malicious file opens the legitimate Orkut network log-in page, and in the background downloads a password stealing Trojan named 'msn.exe.'"
    The Trojans are hosted on a compromised labor union Web site from southern Brazil, according to Websense.
    A Google spokesman said the company was investigating the matter.

    Reports that a purported Gmail vulnerability was being used by unauthorized third parties to hijack domains turned out to be nothing more than a phishing scam, Google announced Tuesday.

    The alleged vulnerability reportedly allowed an attacker to set up filters on users' e-mail accounts without their knowledge, according to a proof of concept posted Sunday at the blog Geek Condition. In the post, Geek Condition's "Brandon" wrote that the vulnerability had caused some people to lose their domain names registered through GoDaddy.com.

    It's hard not to pity Yahoo's very public decline, but that doesn't keep us from scratching our heads over the once-great Silicon Valley powerhouse's recent promotion of a plug-in that debuted a year ago and which its developers say is sorely outdated.
    An early November post on Yahoo's Messenger blog promoted the Twitter-Sync plug-in, published by New Zealand developers WackyB.

    Twitter-Sync, last updated on Yahoo's plug-in site over a year ago on September 6, 2007, is curiously said to sync Twitter and Yahoo status updates only with Yahoo Messenger 9.0, which was released a year after the plug-in was created.
    The math clearly doesn't add up, but for WackyB, the promotion is an extra slap in the face. "Andy" and "Kathy" from WackyB commented on the post:

    It's a shame that Yahoo decided to abruptly end its plugin program for external developers. We created this plugin more than a year ago (published date shows as: Thu, 06 September 2007) when Twitter was in its early days. There have been many improvements to Twitter since then but unfortunately we are unable to update our plugin to reflect this. We have had many requests (more so recently) to make modifications to the plugin but the only way to incorporate changes would be to release as a test plugin (a feature designed to be used only for development). It would have been great if they could have included a means for running local plugins before terminating the plugin system.

    A Yahoo representative confirmed in a statement that the Yahoo Messenger developers program shut down in 2007, but affirmed that Yahoo's new Yahoo Open Strategy (YOS) will be available to independent developers "over time."

    The Netbook, take two: When Advanced Micro Devices said it wasn't going to focus on Netbooks, as Intel and its partners defined them, maybe it was on to something.
    Intel is re-evaluating the Netbook market as possibly not The Next Big Thing. This from the company that makes the Atom processor and accompanying silicon that go into most of the Netbooks sold today.

    At a recent Raymond James IT Supply Chain Conference (streamed via this Intel page), Stu Pann, vice president in the sales and marketing group at Intel, said his company sees the Netbook differently now.
    "We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. It turns out the bulk of the Netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook," Pann said. "We view the Netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market," he added.
    And the most revealing statement? "If you've ever used a Netbook and used a 10-inch screen size--it's fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."

    The Times of London reported this weekend that Microsoft is in talks to acquire Yahoo's search business for $20 billion. According to the paper, former AOL CEO Jonathan Miller and fomer Fox Interactive President Ross Levinsohn are set to head the effort.
    "Senior directors at Microsoft and Yahoo are understood to have agreed the broad terms of a deal, but there is no guarantee that it will succeed," The Times said in its report.
    Microsoft declined to comment on the report. It is worth noting that as of Friday, the market capitalization of Yahoo in its entirety was just shy of $16 billion. Microsoft was once willing to pay far more to get Yahoo, but a lot has changed since the early part of the year.

    Two pieces of malicious software affecting Apple's Mac OS X appeared this week: a Trojan horse with the ability to download and install malicious code of an attacker's choice, and a hacker tool for creating backdoors, according to security vendors.

    The Trojan — called 'OSX.RSPlug.D' by Intego, the Mac security specialist that discovered the threat — is a variant on an older piece of malicious code but with a new installer, Intego said.
    "It is a downloader, and it contacts a remote server to download the files it installs," Intego said in an advisory. "This means that, in the future, the downloader may be able to install payloads [other] than the one it currently installs."
    In other respects the Trojan is similar to previous versions of RSPlug, which first surfaced in October 2007, Intego said. It installs a piece of malicious code known as DNSChanger, which routes the user's internet traffic through a malicious DNS server, leading users to phishing websites or pages displaying advertisements.

    The companies are hoping to duplicate the blockbuster success of the iPhone with models that, in their glassy minimalism, end up looking a lot like it. These include the G1, powered by Google’s Android software; the Instinct from Samsung; the LG Dare; and, most recently, Research in Motion’s much-anticipated BlackBerry Storm.
    But with consumers keeping a close watch on their bank balances, analysts and industry experts say most touch-screen phones will have trouble getting onto the list of this season’s must-have gadgets.
    The surge of touch screens has its roots in the introduction of the iPhone on AT&T’s network in June 2007, which left rival carriers scrambling for comparable offerings.
    “What you’re seeing right now is the first wave of competitors spurred by the media juggernaut for the iPhone,” said Ed Snyder, a telecommunications industry analyst with Charter Equity Research. Mr. Snyder said that when the iPhone hype hit, “no credible cellphone executive could not get a touch-screen phone started.”

    On the Google Desktop gadgets team, we've seen countless requests for a Gmail gadget over the years. That gadget is finally here, so if you've got Google Desktop for Windows, give it a try.

    You'll see that it covers the basics such as reading, searching, and sending messages. You can star messages, use the same keyboard shortcuts, and we didn't forget about contact auto-complete. It doesn't take up much space in your sidebar or desktop, and you can also resize it to show as few or as many messages as you'd like.

    When I'm at work, I keep two instances of the gadget open: one logged into my personal Gmail account and the other set to my Google Apps account for work related stuff. Instead of getting lost in a sea of tabs or browser windows, I can bring up the gadgets in an instant (hint: pressing the shift key twice brings up all your hidden Desktop gadgets).

    The Gmail gadget currently works with the latest release of Google Desktop for Windows. Try it out and please let us know what you think.

    Activision has named practically its entire 2009 line-up at an in-game advertiser meeting, including Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

    Speaking at an 'upfront' meeting with in-game ad company Massive Inc. (responsible for the famous Obama Burnout Paradise ad), Activision named its 2009 games including tentatively titled Guitar Hero 5, a new Tony Hawk's and Modern Warfare 2.

    The sixth CoD game was already confirmed to be under Infinity Ward's wing (and not World at War dev Treyarch), but this news thankfully confirms that number six isn't the rumoured sci-fi spin-off we were dreading.

    No details on the game were released, though it was roughly dated for release in autumn 2009.

    In the meeting, Activision also confirmed that in the new Tony Hawk's "you're not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands." It's out on PS3, 360, Wii and DS in October. We smell a peripheral coming...

    Bizarrely (ho ho), the publisher also confirmed PGR dev Bizarre Creations' first Activision racer will be a James Bond game. In fact it'll be an original racing game that's been described as "Mario Kart meets Forza". Read more on that here.

    I've never bought into the "Sun Microsystems is toast" thesis that you often hear tossed around at industry get-togethers. Even in a deepening recession, this is a company with ample resources and a wealth of talented developers. But with some of the hottest development action now taking place on mobile phone platforms, how relevant is Java going to be to the future tech conversation?
    Earlier today, my colleague Stephen Shankland wrote about the debut of JavaFX, a Sun programming language that's supposed to be easier to use than Java. In his story, he quoted Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz talking up the potential of a coherent "runtime" foundation that won't wind up splintered into different (and incompatible) versions. To wit: "We're making our binaries available" to mobile phone makers "so we can unify the Java platform implementation."

    Update 6:15 p.m. PST: An earlier version of this story said the second beta version of Firefox 3.1 would likely be the last. Firefox is planning a third beta version. Also, added a comment from Paul Rouget about when the second beta version will likely be released.
    The second beta version of Firefox 3.1 is "due out very shortly," Mozilla programmer Ben Turner said Thursday.

    One big change in the 3.1b2 is the addition of "Web workers," a feature that lets the browser process tasks in the background. That feature, part of the still-evolving HTML 5 specification, adds another level of sophistication for programmers writing Web applications and gives multicore computers a better way to use their processors' abilities.
    "We've been hard at work with folks from Google, Apple, and others to get this new spec nailed down," Turner said of the Web workers work.
    Google and Apple also build their own browsers, as does market-leading Microsoft and ever-scrappy Opera. With the browser wars back in full force, those organizations are racing to outdo each other on features and performance.
    He gave one illustration of Web workers in action running a JavaScript program that emulates a decades-old processor design, the 8080. One thread emulates the processor in the background while another handles user interaction such as checking for typing on the keyboard.
    In a post on the Mozilla Add-ons Blog, Paul Rouget said: "Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 will likely be released the first week of December." He added: "We have added a Beta 3 to our schedule."

    Not too long ago, one of the Gmail engineers broke out her vinyl cutter and made some Gmail m-velope stickers. Pretty soon, they were pasted to our desks, stuck on our laptops, and adorning the walls around the office. Then other people started asking us about them -- first it was just other Googlers. But when a guy I was sitting next to on an airplane asked where he could get a Gmail sticker, we realized other people might like them too.

    So we designed some more, and printed up a whole bunch.

    There's the standard Gmail m-velope -- dressed up in glitter. One of three bookplate style stickers you can stick on anything from the inside of a favorite book to your laptop or your skateboard. (Trading with friends is encouraged -- we realize the unicorn isn't for everyone.) And there's a sheet of keyboard shortcut stickers intended as a tool to help people learn Gmail's shortcuts. The adhesive is a bit more removable than standard stickiness, so you can take them off once you've trained your fingers.

    So how do you get your stickers? We may be all about speedy electronic communication, but this time we're going old school with snail mail. Just send a self-addressed stamped envelope (along with a note if you're so inclined) to:

This time the aim is to evaluate the antimalware tools' effectiveness against unknown threats in a test scenario meant to prove the heuristic part and the generic markers of the on-demand scanning engines." The best in show (of 16 anti-malware packages evaluated), Avira AntiVir was able to find 71% of the unknown malware it was exposed to in the first week, dropping to 67% after the fourth.

    There will be no antiphishing feature in the final version of Firefox 2.0 when it is released later this month, according to Computerworld.
    Google asked Mozilla to disable the feature in Firefox 2.0.0.19 that warns users of sites suspected of hosting identity fraud scams because the older browsers rely on an outdated SafeBrowsing protocol that Google is not supporting anymore, Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox, told Computerworld.
    Firefox 2.0.0.19 is scheduled to ship December 16 and will be the final security update for the browser. The company released Firefox 3 in June.
    Asked for comment, a Google spokesman provided this statement via e-mail: "Google encourages users to always use the latest version of the software they're running. Users of Firefox 2 will be notified of the change when they are updated to 2.0.0.19; we recommend that users upgrade to Firefox 3 to continue getting protection. Firefox 3 includes our Safe Browsing v2 protocol which is more efficient with network bandwidth, continues to help protect against phishing, and also adds malware protection."
    Mozilla representatives could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

    Facebook's millions of users are in the crosshairs of a computer virus dubbed Koobface that is being spread through the social networking site's messaging system.

    Users whose computers are infected may have their credit card numbers stolen or their searches on Google, Yahoo and MSN diverted to fraudulent Web sites.
    The malicious code underscores how hackers are increasingly targeting social networking sites including Facebook and MySpace to capitalize on their big audiences. Because social networking sites allow messages only between fellow members who are confirmed friends, many users assume they are safe.
    Koobface is spread through messages sent from friends whose computers are infected with the virus. The messages arrive in Facebook inboxes with titles like "you look just awesome in this new movie" and direct readers to another Web site to supposedly watch the clip.
    After clicking to visit the site, users are shown a message that tells them they need an updated Adobe Systems Flash player. But downloading the software infects the victim's computer with the virus.

    Python update makes break with past

    Python developers on Wednesday released the final version of Python 3.0, a major reworking of the programming language that is incompatible with the Python 2 series.


    Python is widely used for web applications such as YouTube.
    Python 3.0, also called Python 3000 or Py3K, is the first Python release that is intentionally backwards-incompatible, according to project founder Guido van Rossum.
    "Nevertheless, after digesting the changes, you'll find that Python really hasn't changed all that much — by and large, we're mostly fixing well-known annoyances and warts, and removing a lot of old cruft," van Rossum said in a document outlining the changes.
